At just two and a half years old, Artem’s childhood changed when he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive brain tumour. His family left Ukraine in search of treatment, and over the next three years, Artem endured surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and three bone marrow transplants. Cancer took away so much of his early childhood, including the chance to learn, play and grow alongside other children. When his family finally came to Canada, Artem was cancer-free, but the journey was far from over. He was learning a new language, rebuilding his strength and confidence, navigating anxiety and preparing to enter school for the very first time at age six.
