Sylvia began the fight for her life at the age of 15 when she was diagnosed with leukemia. While she would begin that fight in Turkey, she would finish it in Canada. Between two countries, two cultures, and two health care systems, it wasn’t easy for Sylvia and her family. Sylvia is grateful they moved to Canada as that’s where she discovered Kids Cancer Care, things got better: “Camp is the best thing that my cancer journey has given me. I love everything about it — the songs we sing around the campfire, the delicious food, and the activities.”

Although the treatments are over, Sylvia is now dealing with their after-effects. She wears a hearing aid now and needs to use a brace or walker to get around. Fortunately, she’s able to rebuild her strength and balance at our PEER exercise program. Sylvia is also building her leadership skills by volunteering through our Teen Leadership Program. One day, she hopes to give back in other ways too: “Thank you so much for giving me and other kids like me the opportunity to enjoy such fun activities and programs. One day I want to donate as well, just like you.”
