Radiation Doses and Timing
The dosage and timing of radiation therapy are critical. It takes medical expertise to calculate the exact doses that will control the tumour without causing overwhelming health problems in the future. If chemotherapy is part of the regimen, it may be necessary to alter the dose because some drugs can positively or negatively enhance the effect of the radiation.
The doctor who plans the timing, duration, site, aim and dose of radiation treatment is called a radiation oncologist or radiotherapist. Therapy is usually given on a daily basis, perhaps five times a week, over several weeks until the total dose is delivered.
