Radiation Therapy
Radiation is a type of x-ray therapy that damages or kills cancer cells. It is administered to about half of all children with cancer. It is often used in the early stages of the disease, when the cancer is still localized but too advanced for surgery. After the primary tumour has been removed, doctors use radiation to clean up any remaining tumour cells. Radiation works well with surgery for it "gets" the residual local cells that the operation misses, while surgery can handle a large tumour that radiation alone could not cure. Some tumours that do not require surgery may be cured by radiation alone.
