Long-term Effects
In Alberta alone, there are close to 2,000 children
living with the long-term effects of cancer today.
Lifelong disabilities from cancer and its treatment
may include short stature, unsteady gait, blindness,
deafness, motor and cognitive impairments as well as
heart, vision and hearing impairments. Second
tumours, obesity disorders and psychosocial,
neurologic and endocrine disorders are also common.
Patients with solid tumours may have impairments
from surgery including scars or amputation. A high
percentage of survivors experience severe health
problems that seriously impact their quality of life
and ultimately their life expectancy. This is
particularly true of patients who received radiation
treatments. |
