Effects of Radiation
Radiation is not without its disadvantages and side effects. Normal cells are damaged during radiation treatments. In small children and infants, the growth patterns of bones and other tissues can be altered. There is a possibility that a second cancer may appear years later. And, if the pelvic area is radiated, sterility may result. These risks must be weighed against the benefits while planning treatment options. New medical technology and equipment have reduced some of the side effects and enhanced the effectiveness of radiation. In the last 50 years, the survival rate of patients with tumours who have undergone radiation therapy have increased by leaps and bounds.
