Radiation therapy
Radiation is a type of x-ray therapy that damages or
kills cancer cells. Read more
Recurrence
The reappearance of a disease that had disappeared
with earlier treatment.
Red blood cell
A small cell in the blood that brings oxygen to
tissues and carries away carbon dioxide.
Regression
Shrinkage of cancer growth.
Relapse
The return of cancer after a remission or after it
had been controlled by treatment. After a relapse,
the young person must undergo treatment again to try
to bring about another remission. It can take
months, even years, to bring a child back into
remission.
Remission
A complete or partial disappearance of the disease
or when it is under control. If a complete remission
continues for a number of years, doctors consider
the patient cured.
Rhabdomyosarcoma
Rhabdomyosarcoma is a muscle tumour and is the most
common soft tissue sarcoma in children. The
occurrence peaks between the ages of two and six and
also between 15 and 19. Ten per cent of cases appear
before the age of one and 70 per cent appear in the
first 10 years of life. It can occur in any muscle
tissue in the body. The most common sites are the
head and neck, including the eye socket and the
genitourinary tract.
Primary tumours are also
found in muscles of the limbs, buttocks and trunk.
Retinoblastoma
Retinoblastoma is a highly malignant cancer of the
retina of the eye. It accounts for two per cent of
childhood malignancies.
