about the scholarship fund
The KCCFA Derek Wandzura Memorial Scholarship Fund was
launched on February 15, 2008 on International Childhood
Cancer Day but its origins go back to November 17, 2007 on
the occasion of Christine McIver’s 50th birthday. That day,
over 150 friends gathered to celebrate her birthday and to
raise money for a scholarship fund for young people with a
history of childhood cancer. The name of the fund honours
Christine’s son Derek, who passed away in 1991 from a
malignant brain tumour.
KCCFA announced the scholarship fund
on February 15, 2008, to mark
International Childhood Cancer
Day (ICCD). With the help of generous community friends,
KCCFA was able to endow $100,000 in the scholarship fund,
and, later this spring, will award $5,000 in bursaries to
the program’s first recipients.
The bursary is open to residents of Alberta who
have a history of childhood cancer.
The KCCFA Derek Wandzura Memorial Scholarship fund is
managed by
The Calgary Foundation
(TCF) and remains open for donations, thereby increasing its
value and benefit to cancer survivors. Donate to the KCCFA
